Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for a PAN card using only Aadhaar after April 2026?
No. From April 1, 2026, the Aadhaar-only application process will end. You will need additional documents like a birth certificate, voter ID, or passport to prove your date of birth alongside Aadhaar.
What are the new PAN card rules for property transactions?
Under the Draft Income Tax Rules 2026, the threshold for quoting a PAN card during property transactions has been increased from ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh.
Can I still use the old PAN application form?
No. Starting April 1, 2026, the existing (old) PAN application forms will become invalid. The Income Tax Department is introducing new category-specific forms that must be used for all fresh applications and update requests.
What if the name on my Aadhaar and PAN documents don’t match?
Under the new 2026 rules, the name on your PAN card will be directly fetched and strictly aligned with your Aadhaar records. If there is a mismatch, your application may be rejected. It is highly advised to update your Aadhaar details before applying.
Are these rules applicable for updating an existing PAN?
Yes. The new documentation rules apply to both applying for a fresh PAN card and making corrections or updates to an existing PAN card on or after April 1, 2026.
Is my current PAN card still valid after April 2026?
Yes, your existing PAN card remains fully valid. The new rules primarily affect fresh applications and requests for updates or corrections. You do not need to re-apply if your current PAN is active.
Is linking PAN with Aadhaar still mandatory under the new rules?
Absolutely. The mandate to link your PAN with your Aadhaar continues. Unlinked PANs will remain inoperative, restricting your ability to file tax returns, open bank accounts, or perform high-value transactions.
